Proof of alternative treatments for cancer?

I had breast cancer last year at 31. Had chemotherapy and now I am in remission.

I had a friend who was quite alternative in her thinking. She strongly disagreed with chemotherapy, she told me with natural therapies, positive thinking and dietary changes the cancer would resolve itself. The same friend told me that I’d brought the cancer upon myself with my lifestyle choices. Needless to say I no longer speak to her.

I know that natural therapy, positive thinking and diet do much to alleviate side effects and improve quality of life, but is there any evidence to suggest that they are a viable alternative to traditional cancer treatments?

Has cancer ever just gone away by itself?

The double blind standard demanded in Western Science has never been proven to show supplements alone as a cure. That said, surgery/chemo alone is not really a cure either. We are talking remission in most cases, and a five year survival rate is what they aim for as a meaningful remission.

That said, everyone has to follow their own ideals when it comes to medical care. I have seen cancers in relatives and friends treated many times with traditional chemo/radiation. I have seen a few people choose alternative therapies. Just from watching people I know personally, I have to say alternative therapies gives a much better quality of life. That is my personal opinion, obviously not a medical opinion. I am sure that if 100 people were asked this exact same question, each would see things a bit differently. It is just up to your own personal judgment.

Everyone on this earth dies at some point. Sometimes simply choosing to live a life with less discomfort and higher quality is better than suffering through chemo and being in and out of the hospital. Maybe that was what she was thinking. Some people have a higher tolerance level when it comes to difficult treatments. Perhaps she doesn’t have the ability to endure some of the treatments that you can. Quality vs quantity of life are very personal decisions.

Your friend made the choice right for her. You make the choice right for you. Neither one of you have to agree, nor do you have to validate the other’s opinion.

I hope you do well, and live many, many years with a wonderful life. Good luck and may God bless you in the treatment options that you choose. Each person has to walk their own path. Whatever you chose/choose is right for you.

As far as your behaviors or any one elses behaviors causing cancer, when it reaches the point of making treatment choices, the cause doesn’t matter. You can’t look back and guess about the past. You just start from where you are, and do the best you can do to make the decisions right for you from that point. Looking back, trying to assess guilt, and regret is not helpful to the situation at that point.

Why is EVERYBODY lying (or is it just ignorance) about there being no cure for viral infections?

Especially the common cold. It’s what we eat. Wake up people. Our original diet consisted of fruit and every herb bearing seed. If you go back to it, disease CANT exist in your body!! Health wise whats the best choice?

Diet coke is sugar free but has acids and artificial sweetners in that are linked to stripping calcium and even cancer.

Whereas tonic water has sugar and similar acids in too.

Type 2 Diabetes Diets

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that is becoming more common in today’s society. It results mainly from poor lifestyle choices and dietary habits and results in a range of health problems including increased risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and obesity.

To make matters worse, the type 2 diabetes diets that are recommended by most nutritionists and dieticians are completely wrong! The sample diabetic menus they provide their clients will NOT help to improve the diabetic condition. In fact, what they provide as a diabetes control diet will actually make the diabetes condition worse!

One of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance, which is characterised by an inability of body cells to bind insulin and allow nutrients to flow into cells.

One of the causes of insulin resistance is an excess consumption of carbohydrates over many years which then results in the insulin receptors on cell membranes becoming ‘down-regulated’ to the action of insulin.

Insulin gets produced in response to an increase in the blood sugar level and in healthy people insulin will then bind to insulin receptors on cell membranes and allow glucose and other nutrients to get into the cell.

When a person with insulin resistance consumes a diet high in carbohydrates, as is generally recommended, the insulin resistance becomes worse!

People with insulin resistance (type 2 diabetics and women with poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) should consume a low-carbohydrate diet! By following this approach, over time, the insulin receptors will be forced to ‘re-open’ and allow nutrients to flow into the cells again.

This means the ideal menu for diabetics is one that contains less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. This equates to less than 10 grams of carbohydrates per meal. Plus, it is best if these carbohydrates come from medium or low-density sources as well as low GI sources.

By following this approach, the carbohydrates they do eat will have minimal impact on their blood sugar levels and therefore, insulin response.

Over time, depending on the severity of the insulin resistance and depending on what other strategies they use to help overcome the condition, i.e. exercise and the use of glucose disposal agents, the insulin resistance may be reversed. This also means that many of the problems that are associated with type 2 diabetes may be overcome as well.

Once the person’s blood sugar levels have normalised it may then be possible to re-introduce more carbohydrates back into their diet. If they maintain healthy meal options, keep their portions sizes small and perform some exercise, they should be able to maintain healthy blood glucose levels with ease.

Low Iodine diet before Radio Iodine treatment for thyroid cancers?

I am just starting a low Iodine diet for 2 weeks (less tan 65 micrograms) before I have a radioactive Iodine treatment for Thyroid cancer. I was wondering if there is anyone who has any menu ideas, or meal ideas for me, or have been on the same diet? I have a few basic ones, but you can only eat the same thing so many times!

I went through the same thing last November – during Thanksgiving! It didn’t seem like it would be that difficult but once you start you realize just how much you can’t eat.

For breakfast I ate oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts (unsalted). I also had a few egg white omelets.

I made a big pot of beef stew (see link below for recipe) so I had that for many many dinners. I also had pasta with homemade sauce. If you seach you can find one brand of canned tomatos that doesn’t have salt.

For dessert I made wacky cake (recipe is also below) – it’s a chocolate cake that uses cocoa powder so it’s ok.

Could I have colon cancer?

I am 30, almost 31 years old, male and overweight. I have been having some pain in my right side around my gallbladder area for about 4 weeks. My doctor did blood work which ruled out ulcers, an ultrasound which ruled out gall stones and an x-ray which said that I am constipated. However, I have a bowel movement almost every day or at least every other day. I don’t struggle to go and have an amount which I’d say is regular and healthy. The x-ray shows that there is some stool that is stuck in my colon and they recommended a high fiber diet and a laxative if necessary. I plan to do what the doctor said, but if she is wrong about the constipation could it be colon cancer? On an x-ray can colon cancer ever be mistaken for constipation? I always thought the risk of colon cancer didn’t start until you were in your 50’s or so. Am I too young to get colon cancer?

I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist in a few weeks, but until then I’d like some peace of mind.

My staffy x Charlie has just been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, he has just had his radiation treatment yesterday. I am trying to find an experienced, highly recommended Holistic Vet within Sydney that I can see about his diet, herbal supplements etc

Has anyone used a Holistic Vet for the treatment of their pets cancer? If so was it successful? And secondly can anyone recommend a good, geniune, experienced holistic vet that I can take my little man to?

I am in the US, so I can’t help you with finding a Holistic Vet in Sydney. But I used to Tech for a well respected Veterinary Internist. We had several clients that went to a Holistic Vet in another state. They drove a long way to see this vet. Then we would do the follow up care. One case we had was a dog with a rectal tumor. The dog lived for a couple of years, BUT the owner had the tumor reduced surgically several times. It was an aggressive cancer, and ultimately killed the dog, but the dog lived a couple of years more than it would have.
We also had another dog that had a brain tumor. The owner went to the same vet. The dog lived about 9-12 months with the brain tumor.
I don’t know if I have answered your question, but I wish you luck with your dog.
