All About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells begin to reproduce and attack the tissues of the lungs.

That’s the plain and simple explanation. Here’s a short expansion: in its normal life, a cell will grow, divide, proliferate and then die, all the while meeting the needs of your body. When one or more of these cells begin to reproduce on their own, without serving their original purpose within the body, they form a tumor or a cancer. This is a mutation that researchers don’t fully understand. Left unchecked, the cells will continue to reproduce and spread throughout the lung’s tissue and then into the other vital organs of the body.

In 2004, the last year in which statistics were available at the time of the writing of this article, approximately 158,000 US citizens died from lung cancer, more than breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostrate cancer combined. While the numbers continue to drop every year as new strides are made in treating the disease and educating people, this is still represents a major health problem.

The primary cause of most lung cancers is …

Yes, you guessed it … cigarette smoking. Or more precisely, the inhalation of the carcinogens contained within the smoke. If a smoker is also exposed to radon in the environment, well, that’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Beyond these two contributors, there is a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma, which results from exposure to asbestos. However, cigarette smoke continues to be the major causes behind most forms of lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Symptoms

Here are few things to be looking for if you’re concerned about the potential for lung cancer:

- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath and wheezing (dyspnoea)
- A cough that doesn’t go away and gets worse over time
- Repeated problems with pneumonia or bronchitis
- Constant chest pain
- Coughing up blood (bloody sputum) (haemoptysis)
- Swelling of the neck and face
- Fever
- Loss of appetite and weight loss (anorexia)
- Hoarse voice

Other symptoms can include repeated bouts of pneumonia, changes in the shape of the fingertips, and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes (glands) in the upper chest and lower neck. Any and all of these symptoms may be caused by lung cancer or by a range of other medical conditions. That is, the presence of one or more of these symptoms does not automatically mean that you have lung cancer. Which is why you need to visit with your physician if you have any concerns at all.

Forms of Lung Cancer

The two primary forms of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for approximately 80% of diagnosed lung cancer cases. Within this category of lung cancer, there are three main sub-categories … squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinomas, and large cell carcinomas. Sometimes two or even all three can appear together.

Small cell lung cancer is the less common of the two, which is good, because it’s also the more deadly. Smoking is the primary cause behind this form of lung cancer. SCLC is aggressive and fast-moving. It rapidly metastasizes to other organs, and is often not discovered until the cancer is already widespread throughout the body.

The Good News

Since prevention is always better than cure, it’s highly advisable to avoid the use tobacco. The best way to increase your odds of never encountering lung cancer is to never start smoking in the first place. However, if it’s already too late for you, there’s still some good news. You can gradually decrease your risk of the disease if you quit at any early age and your lungs are given 10 to 15 years to recover from the damage already imparted upon them.

About the Author

To learn more about the early symptoms of lung cancer and for a comprehensive selection of articles covering all aspects of this dreaded disease, its symptoms, treatments, and more, visit: http://www.lungcancerinsights.com

How long from the time symptoms occur is it obvious someone has Lung Cancer?

i have felt fatigued for a few months now, and now my chest is starting to hurt, and i have worsening breathlessness. i am very worried, i got an x-ray but my doctor has not gotten back to me yet.

“BSherman” is correct. If someone has symptoms of lung cancer, it will show up on
x-ray studies. Chest pain is not a common presenting symptom of lung cancer.
It would help us a great deal to know what age you are. Only 3% of lung cancers are found in people under age 45. Most lung cancers are found in people over age 65.
I suspect you are under age 45. The majority of the time that a lung cancer is growing is asymptomatic, so symptoms are a very late sign. The chances are that you do not have lung cancer, but your x-rays and your doctor will make the call – not those of us here on YA.

An Ovarian Cancer Symptom Is Not An Ovarian Cancer Prognosis – Yet

Ovarian cancer is difficult to diagnose and surgery is often required to know for certain. One of the reasons is that the symptoms are vague, and indicative of many common female complaints. These are the typical symptoms.

A sense of pelvic heaviness, vague lower abdominal discomfort, vaginal bleeding, weight gain or loss, unexplained fatigue, abnormal menstrual cycles, unexplained back pain that worsens over time, and non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms such as increased gas, indigestion, lack of appetite, bloating, nausea and vomiting.

Ready to run get a checkup? You probably should, but first let me ask you one question. What if the doctor comes back with an ovarian cancer prognosis or wants to perform surgery for further diagnosis? Are you going to surrender to the knife and/or chemotherapy? That’s all conventional medicine has to offer in regards to ovarian cancer, which is the deadliest form of female reproductive cancer.

If you’ve been experiencing several of the ovarian cancer symptoms even if they’re not caused by cancer, they are not supposed to be there. Just because so many women in our society have such symptoms, they are after all, still symptoms. They’re not normal! That’s why they call them symptoms.

You may not be aware of this but there are very effective alternative treatments for all of those symptoms. Even if they are due to ovarian cancer, alternative medicine is being preferred more and more as a viable option for a cancer cure as opposed to the invasive and barbaric methods of conventional cancer treatments.

If you ultimately do decide to go the conventional route to treat your cancer, alternative methods can be incorporated in conjunction with surgery and chemo. Suppose your having just one ovarian cancer symptom seriously enough that you feel it warrants being checked out by a physician, and it turns out you aren’t diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It doesn’t mean you won’t be, a little further down the road.

Instead of hoping there’s some magic a doctor might be able to perform or prescribe to make everything better, why don’t you do it? Whether you’ve been diagnosed or not, listen closely to what your body’s trying to tell you, research the appropriate natural remedies that address the symptoms, and incorporate as many of them as possible into a daily regimen. Then follow it. You’ll know if they’re working inside of a few days if not immediately. Natural remedies are that potent, and they address the actual problem as opposed to just the symptoms. If your having any of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, it’s a sign your not healthy.

Sure a significant part of alternative medicine does revolve around diet, but why shouldn’t it? Most health problems are caused by poor dietary choices and/or lifestyle preferences, and they can be corrected by the same. Still, there are many magic potions for every disease in the realm of alternative medicine, especially cancer.

Conventional medicine doesn’t pay any attention to them because they’re all natural and un-patentable by the pharmaceutical companies, which means they can’t be exploited or monopolized. The body is natural, so it only makes sense the cure for a disease would be too. In fact the majority of diseases are caused by either repeated exposure to un-natural substances, or due to a diet comprised of food that has been denatured. Usually both.

So take it as a wake up call. If you have ovarian cancer symptoms and especially if you’ve already received an ovarian cancer prognosis, which are never good. It’s time to take responsibility for your own health, and you should be very wary of anything a conventional M.D. says. Blind faith is definitely not recommended when dealing with the modern medical version of cancer cures. Let us not forget, cancer is more or less a man-made or at least a man induced disease to begin with.

After all, the AMA track record for ovarian cancer barely has a 50% survival rate. That doesn’t include those that have an ovarian cancer recurrence, which is all but guaranteed if the original cause of the cancer is not addressed. And that means what? That’s right, holistic health. You just can’t get around it, so why not embrace it?

Either educate yourself about holistic health and follow up on what you’ve learned, or put it in the hands of a qualified naturopathic physician. Ultimately the responsibility will still fall back on you. So do this! Do it for yourself and do it for those who care about you. And don’t stop your research. Thank God for the inter-net! It makes it so easy. You’ll be glad you did. Best wishes and good luck.

Every woman gets cysts every month it is part of the ovulation cycle. Normal cysts develop and go away on their own. Most of the time they are not even noticed. It is normal at the time of ovulation to feel a twinge of pain as the egg is released. Any thing more than that should be looked into. If the pain is severe or does not go away in a few days.
Large cysts can cause the ovary to twist over and cut off it’s own blood supply, but this is rare. They can rupture and cause problems. And yes

Male Breast Cancer Symptoms

However, less is known specifically about this form of therapy for breast cancer survivors. Male Breast Cancer Symptoms One reason for this is that physicians are concerned about prescribing any of these drugs to their patients for fear that it might increase the risk of cancer recurrence. But along with this, blanket statements regarding hormone replacement therapy are quite inappropriate. Each individual woman should be given the chance to consider the risks and benefits of hormone replacement based on their personal situation. Every woman experiences menopause differently, with varying degrees of symptoms. Some women go through menopause with little difficulty and without increased risk of osteoporosis or heart disease. For others, menopause is traumatic and can introduce increased chances of illness into their lives.

Professional practice in medicine has endorsed allowing women to replace ovarian hormones with hormone replacement therapy once the ovaries begin to fail. Evidence and clinical experiences indicate that the benefits clearly outweigh the risk and expense of such therapy. However, evidence has yet to be found with regards to the risks to women surviving beast cancer. Most concerns are based on speculation and anecdotal experience alone.

For most women, the question lies in the correlation between hormone replacement therapy and an increased risk of breast cancer. Does hormone therapy contribute to breast cancer? Before starting such treatment, physicians often require their patients to get a baseline screening mammogram and because women receiving treatment are under a physician’s surveillance, they are more likely to get annual screenings. Although there is no difference between women who are not on hormone replacement and those who are on it for less than ten years, once the duration exceeds the ten-year benchmark, there is a slight increase in breast cancer incidence, but the numbers are insignificant. There also appears to be anecdotal data that women with breast lobular neoplasm may have an increased risk for recurrence with hormone replacement therapy. However, with or without this form of therapy, these women are still at an increased risk of recurrence.

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

On the other end of the spectrum, how does one know that one is cured of breast cancer? Unfortunately, there is no absolute way to know. Statistical probabilities can be given based on the cancer’s characteristics. If one is destined to relapse, it will usually happen in the first five years after the diagnosis. Regrettably, late recurrences do rarely occur. Breast cancer patients are advised that once treatment is complete, they should consider themselves cured, move on.

Medical research shows that low dose hormone replacement therapy for less than 10 years does not significantly contribute to the development of breast cancer in the general population, but the question is, does this apply to the population of women cured of breast cancer? Sadly, there are no studies to confirm this and no evidence has yet surfaced from past studies to answer this. The safest way to think about it though, is that for women with a high probability of cure, the benefits of this treatment far outweigh the risks.

When the stage of melanoma has been diagnosed, it is then possible for the doctors to determine the best type of treatment.Ajcc Colon Cancer Staging In this article, we will discuss what the different stages of melanoma signify. We will describe each of the four stages in further detail. Hopefully, after reading this article you will have a greater knowledge of the skin cancer disease known as melanoma and the four degrees associated with it.

Stage 1 of melanoma is thin and the epidermis usually appears scraped. This stage of skin cancer is subdivided into two other categories. These additional categories describe the thickness of the tumor. Stage 1a is less than 1.0 mm and has no ulceration. Stage 1b is less than 1.0 mm but has ulceration. It is also considered to be in stage 1b if it is 1.01 – 2.0 mm even if it does not involve ulceration. In this stage and stage 2 the melanoma has not yet spread to the lymph nodes.

Stage 2 is also subdivided into three more categories that signify the thickness and the existence or non-existence of ulceration. The tumor in stage 2a is 1.01 – 2.0 mm with ulceration or 2.01 – 4.0 mm without ulceration. Stage 3b has a tumor thickness of 2.01 with ulceration or a thickness of more than 4.0 without ulceration.

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

When this type of skin cancer advances to stage 3 a significant change occurs. At this stage, the melanoma tumor has spread to the lymph nodes. This is a much more serious stage of the disease because when healthy, the lymph nodes fight disease, cancer and some other infections.

Patients with stage 3 of this cancer have melanoma that has spread into lymph nodes near the primary tumor. This stage also involves in-transit metastasis that has skin or connective tissue that is more than 2 centimeters from the original tumor. However, at this point it has not spread past the regional lymph nodes.

In stage 4, the melanoma has spread to lymph nodes that are a distance from the original tumor or to internal organs. These organs are most often the lung, liver, brain, bone and then the gastrointestinal tract.

When diagnosed with skin cancer, it is important to consult with your doctor concerning the degree or stage of melanoma that you may have. A variety of diagnostic techniques will likely be used to determine the stage of your skin cancer. Most stage 1 and stage 2 melanomas should not cause too much worry because they can most often be cured through surgery. There is little need to worry about getting later stages of melanoma just because you once suffered through the early stages.

Different doctors may use different systems or scales to classify the stages of melanoma. The most commonly used are the TNM staging system and the Breslow scale. The most important things to remember are that melanomas with 0.76 mm or lower thickness are low risk, 0.76 – 1.5 mm involve medium risk and when the melanoma is more than 1.5 mm in thickness you are at a much higher risk. When you are diagnosed with melanoma it is important that you understand exactly what stages your doctor may be referring to and what treatments are available to you.

What are the names of the different stages of different cancers?

For colon cancer stage one it is called dukes a. For stage 2 it is called dukes b and so on. Is there any other types of cancer the uses dukes for a stage? If not what name do they use for different stages? Links to sites would be great. Thank you so much for helping!

Well, it depends on which system that you use. In general all cancers are considered to have four stages and three grades of tumor. Staging is used by the oncologist and surgeon to determine what the best treatment is to be used. So, the majority people only really need to know the stage of their cancer and not all the systems that describe it.

So, in general, there are four stages:

Stage 1 – Early cancer. One small tumor.
Stage 2 – Early cancer. Tumor larger.
Stage 3 – Tumor larger than before. More than one. Tissue invasion.
Stage 4 – Advanced cancer. Large tumors, invasion of tissue, metastatic spred through lymph nodes or blood

And, their are three grades . . low, medium and high grade in reference to how abnormal the cells look under a microscope.

Sarcoma is often described as Groups . . instead of Stages . .but it is basically the same thing.

As for your direct question about colon cancer there are 3 systems of stagings that can be used depending on the hospital or country you are in. ACS provides a description for you:

Breast cancer: symptoms, prevention and treatment

Breast cancer is a type of cancer can occur in breast cells of men and women. It is the second most common form of cancer. It is also regarded as the fifth most common cause of cancer-related deaths.

Breast cancer is a cancer that originates in the breast cells of men and women. In the world, this is the second most common form of cancer after lung cancer. It also is said to be the fifth most common cause of cancer-related deaths. The breasts of men and women have the same tissues. Therefore, this type of cancer can occur in both men and women. However, it is 100 times more common in men than in women.

Symptoms:

Prevention:

Breast feeding can prevent breast cancer greatly. Folic acid is said to counter the risk of breast cancer. It has been found that women who consume 3-4 glasses of alcohol every day is more prone to breast cancer.

However, if you consume enough folic acid, then have a lower risk of disease. Folic acid-rich foods include citrus juices and fruits, peas, beans and green leafy vegetables like spinach. In order to prevent breast cancer avoid being a second-hand smoking.

Get your ovaries removes not only reduces the chances of breast cancer in at least 60% but also reduces the risk ovarian cancer by up to 96%.

Projection:

Common methods of detecting breast cancer include clinical breast exams and I, X-ray mammography, genetic testing and MRI. In the process of self-examination, you need to examine their own breasts for lumps in the breast tissue. Mammography examines the chest for some strange lumps or masses.

Regular mammography is recommended for the prevention of breast cancer, especially for people high-risk and older women. Magnetic resonance imaging can also be used to detect cancerous masses.

Treatment:

The main treatment procedure for breast cancer is surgery in which the tumor is located. Other methods are aromatase inhibitors, tamxifen, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Depending on age, tumor size and type of cancer the patient, which are roughly categorized into low-risk individuals and high risk and they all have different treatment procedures. Other possibilities may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy.

ILT or interstitial laser thermotherapy is a way innovative treat this disease. Radiation treatment can also be used to destroy cancer cells that may persist even after surgery.

Past tragedies caused by “miracle drugs” have taught the public to approach cures with caution, and vaccines, in particular, have come under public scrutiny. In The Virus and the Vaccine, journalists Debbie Bookchin and Jim Schumacher uncover the true tale of the polio vaccine and its past and present dangers. Like many medical detective stories before it, this book starts with a chilling anecdote…

Yes, that’s good.

Colon cancer (if found before it has spread outside the colon) is one of the “best” cancers to get, if you insist on having cancer. It tends to stay inside the colon initially, so if doctors cut out that section of colon before it spreads, and sew the ends together, the patient can have a complete recovery. It also grows slowly enough (for a cancer) that it won’t do any serious harm in as little as three months, so it makes sense to take a “wait and see” attitude rather than risking additional surgery…

Hopefully your husband’s cancer has been a gift that has taught him to enjoy each day he gets to have with those who love him…

How do I get a sponsor for a charity marathon?

Hello! I’m running a marathon in October, to raise money for blood cancer research. I’d like to find a corporate sponsor, but I’m not sure the best way. IE if I send a letter, will it even get read? Should I call? What person in an organization usually handles/approves that kind of thing?

My donation link is below, if you want more info (or can spare $5!). I’ve never ran an event before, and I”m really excited!

http://www.active.com/donate/tntvan/mistyjackson

For major corporations, there is always someone in charge of sponsoring a charity. You can usually find that person by going to their website and finding a contact telephone number. If they only list an email address, go with that, but a personal telephone call has a far better chance of success than an email.

In your correspondence with them, let them know about the charity and why it is so important. Personal stories can be nice, but keep them brief. Also, let them know about the various ways that the corporation can get involved in your event. In particular, if there are advertisements or products that they can donate, I am sure they will be interested to hear about them.

Good luck finding a sponsor~!
