There are over 200 different types of cancer and many other rare subtypes. Some cancers are slow growing, some rapid, some are classified in groups rather than in stages. So it all depends on what you are referring to. In general, there are four stages of cancer. Cancer is a progressive disease which means that begins as a single mutated cell begins to replicate without control. The cell was once normal, so the body never recognizes the cell as abroad but what sustains it as if it were a normal organ or body part. The four stages of cancer are related to the size and the invasion and eventual metatastic disease status. Stage 1 disease is a single cell or groups of cells found in one place. If detected early can be easily removed and stopped the cancer. Depending on the cancer, treatment can only be removed surgically. Stage 2 disease is larger and has begun to spread more. Still is quite small and can be removed or treated. Depending on the cancer and the extent of disease, treatment may be chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Stage 3 of the disease can be quite large with multiple tumors of the same size or smaller. The disease has begun to penetrate the surrounding tissue. Stage 4 disease can be large, many tumors and cancer has metastasized by sending a new "evil seed" in the bloodstream or lymphatic system.
